RECYCLING ON THE FARM

This cold frame has been constructed from discarded materials
Old black containers can be filled with water and become a heat store for cool weather
This discarded metal mesh has become a plant trellis
Assorted bricks, wood pipes and wire mesh should be stored neatly
Old car tyres have been used to hold down plastic in my water harvesting area
Old shower panes can be useful as glasshouse doors or for cold frames
This old wheelbarrow dish can become a useful container for plants or for the general storage of small items
Assorted pieces of wood will all find a use given time

Recycling of organic matter in the form of mulch and compost is now a common activity on farms and in gardens. Water shortages and drought conditions have also led to a general trend towards the harvesting, storage and recycling of water. Conservation and generation of energy is also becoming an important issue.

Recycling At My Hobby Farm

But an area of recycling on the farm which is often overlooked is the recycling of used materials such as wood, glass, bricks and plastic.

I have recently constructed a small cold frame, a sheltered area for growing seedlings and cuttings, from old materials scatted around the farm. Old wooden pallets made the frame while foam boxes and assorted pieces of wood and plastic were used to enclose the structure. The structure may not have much aesthetic appeal, but it does its intended job well.

Recycling Materials For Farm

Materials which will eventually have a use on the farm includes wire, plastic sheeting and containers, steel mesh, plastic and metal pipes, house and paving bricks and assorted pieces of wood. Containers for the storage of small items such as nuts, bolts, screws and nails are readily available and can be easily stored in a neat manner in the shed.

Storage Consideration For Recycled Materials

An attitude of using materials, rather than burning or sending them off to the refuse tip can save money and certainly have a positive impact on the environment.

These materials should be stored safely, being aware that they can become havens for spiders, insects and vermin. Keeping outside areas tidy usually entails weed control as weeds will inevitably appear after a short time.

Creative Approach And Positive Management

Maintaining a creative approach to available materials can lead to unusual uses. Even an old car can be modified to act as a small greenhouse. Old car tyres can become props for signs or be turned into open containers for the growing of potatoes, and the uses for reclaimed timber are endless.

Having a positive approach to the management of recycled materials can become a passion and can also lead to some interesting and entertaining creations!
